What happened

UCI Health, part of the University of California, Irvine, has opened the world’s first clinical trial of an embryonic stem cell-derived treatment for Huntington’s disease. The first patient was treated in May 2026 and, so far, has reported no serious side effects.

The condition

Huntington’s disease is an inherited disorder that slowly destroys brain cells. It usually starts between the ages of 35 and 50 and worsens over 10 to 20 years, causing involuntary movements, difficulty with thinking and planning, and mood changes. There is currently no treatment that slows it down.

What the trial involves

The treatment, called hNSC-01, uses neural stem cells made from embryonic stem cells. During a roughly six-hour operation under general anaesthetic, surgeons place the cells into the striatum, the deep part of the brain most damaged by the disease, using MRI scanning to guide them.

The trial will enrol 21 people aged 18 to 65 with early-stage Huntington’s disease. It is funded by a $12 million grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine.

How far along it is

This is a phase 1b/2a trial. Its main purpose is to check that the treatment is safe, while also looking for early signs that it might slow the disease. It will be some years before the results are known.

What it means for families

It is a first attempt to use stem cells to protect the brain in Huntington’s disease. It is at an early stage and not available outside the trial.
